4 of the Hottest Shoes, Part Three: Casuals

Once you've gone through this list, you are well-prepared for the sartorial world of shoes, this season. If you're no stranger to the fashion industry, then you'll know styles are ephemeral. Sure, Stan Smiths lasted a whole year and more. But out of one such versatile pair, are many more designs that have hit the peak, then went back home to be put in storage. Of course, some trends have to fade to make way for the new—and we can't wait to see what's next. Read also: Part 1 | Part 2

1. Mules

Mules are most easily defined by its backless design. However, when it comes to open toes, heel or no, the topic is up for debate. This style traces its roots back to the early aristocrats who wore this not for arduous tasks, but for non-strenuous roles and occupations. The reason for this is simply because the mule is not designed to stay on your feet and will slip off easily, hence considered a luxury item.

2. Open-toed strappy sandals

If you’re prone to sweaty feet, this is the pair for you. Gucci’s criss-cross sandals are having a sartorial moment, and the design has been replicated across many colours. The gold pair however, seems to be the most popular, seconded by the emerald. Not surprising however, since heeled sandals are the secret to elevating your casual outfit, and metallic gold is the cherry on top.

3. Fancy Slides

This one design emerged from the normcore, athleisure trend. Starting with pool slides, dressier styles started coming back into fashion. Hermès' Oran sandals are fashion insiders’ secret, Rihanna’s Fenty fur slides have sold out, and even Ashley Olsen has been spotted out and about in a pair.

4. Lace-ups/Ghillies

Say what you want, but we’ll call this the revival of the gladiators. While not the easiest pair to put on—and certainly the worst, if you're making house calls—lace-ups generally look good on everybody. The vertical climbing laces give its wearer the illusion of length and goes well with dresses. Depending on the level of formality you're aiming for, choose between longer or shorter laces, or opened or closed toes.
