The Future is Now: Met Gala 2016 Announces Theme

Technology has always caught up with fashion, though not in the visible sense. Machine-sewn clothing is a norm; handcrafted bags are priced exorbitantly. But for a while now, we get literal glimpses into the future of fashion. One such designer is Iris van Herpen who infuses 3D printing technology into her creations. With this technology, she was able to create shapes of abnormal proportions—silhouettes that normal fabric just cannot accommodate.

And it's great news for designers like van Herpen, that the theme for this year's Met Gala is Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology. Organised by the Metropolitan Museum of Art to raise funds for its costume institute, the event is one excuse of the year where celebrities can play dress up. The theme for this year meant that forward-looking designers have an opportunity to get more recognition for their work, and is one step closer to bringing the sartorial world into the future. We mean, it's already 2016 but we're still constantly looking towards the past for fashion inspiration (think flared pants and bell sleeves). Maybe this is the one event to propell us into the future. Just maybe. But in the meantime, let's recap Met Gala's recent themes and their most memorable attendees.
