6 Pieces Of Fashion Advice From Our Moms That Will Always Be True

Hello! You are reading a shoppable magazine. :)

Our mothers know best.

When we were little, we would sneak into our mothers' closets to admire their clothes (or, for the brazen, play dress up). When we were teenagers, we resented them for imposing all sorts of rules on us, and not letting us purchase whatever item of clothing currently at the height of fashion. Now that we're all grown up, we're finally realizing that they've gifted us with many gems of wisdom throughout the years.

What fashion advice did your mom impart to you whilst you were growing up? Here's what 6 Singaporean women have to say!

#1: Don't show your ass

Mabel, 28: "My mother always instructed me to "stay classy" by opting for longer hemlines. Frankly, I agree - why put yourself through the hassle of wearing butt-skimming skirts or dresses when you’re going to be fidgeting and pulling your skirt down the entire time?"

#2: Invest in classics

fashion advice
S H O P :
Rachel, 27, says: "My mother doesn’t splurge - except when it comes to classic, well-tailored pieces of clothing. Following in her footsteps has saved me tons of money!"

#3: Don't be afraid of showing your personality

fashion advice
S H O P :
Clarisse, 29, says: "My mother taught me to never be afraid of embracing my kooky side and showing my personality, when it comes to fashion. As a result, I’m not afraid to wear kooky fashion or items that are less "wearable" - such as shirts with ruffled sleeves, pinstripe jumpers, and graphic tees. I’m also known amongst my friends as the ’experimental’ dresser!"

#4: You don't need to spend a lot to look good

fashion advice
S H O P :
Jia Yi, 28, says: "Growing up, we weren’t wealthy, but my mom showed me that you don’t need to spend a lot of money to look good. Apart from being able to hunt for a good bargain, it’s also about your confidence and how you carry yourself!"

#5: If you find something that fits well, buy it in every colour

fashion advice
S H O P :
Xiu Qi, 31, says: "My mom is taller than the average woman, and so am I. This makes shopping tricky - so on the rare occasion when we do find something that fits amazingly, we buy it in every colour and wear it to death in the next few years."

#6: Accessories complete an outfit

fashion advice
S H O P :
Jasmine, 32, says: "My mother taught me that the trick to looking pulled together is simply to accessorize. Whether it’s a simple bangle or a necklace, your outfit will look that much more complete and well thought out as a result!"
