Fashion Is Colour-Blind: One Brand's Journey To Making Fashion in Singapore More Inclusive

Fashion should be colourblind. But it’s not.

Here’s what we mean: whilst Singapore is a multi-racial country, many blogshops and online fashion stores seem to be somewhat skewed in the audiences they cater for.

Amidst a sea of fashion stores which only work with Chinese models and Chinese influencers, new kid on the block Haylen is trying to shake things up, and make fashion in Singapore more inclusive.

Owned by Hid and Tabatha, together with Hid's sister Munirah, the homegrown brand which was launched in late 2017 seeks to appeal to women of different races. They do this by engaging influencers of different ethnicities to promote their clothing, as well as offering alteration services for their customers. (Alterations are done by Hid's other sister Aisyah, whom the team also roped in to help).

“In the long term, the plan is to bring in a wide range of sizes so that we can cater to women of all body types. As of now, that’s still a little difficult, so we’re offering alteration services instead,” says Tabatha.

If you’ve ever shopped online, you can probably understand the pain of falling in love with a gorgeous dress or skirt on an online store, only to realise that it won’t fit you when you check the measurements. Here’s the good news: you won’t face these problems when shopping at Haylen – because they offer alteration services, and shorten hemlines, take in waists, and do other adjustments for their customers. Whilst you'll have to pay a nominal fee for these alteration services, Team Haylen will go all the way to your doorstep to measure you for the best fit, if you're unsure of your sizing. Talk about good service!

Other than doing their part to make fashion more inclusive, Haylen also prides themselves on empowering women and giving them the confidence to wear what they want.

“Our customers sometimes tell us that they’re not sure if they can pull off a certain colour or style,” says Tabatha. As Tabatha’s the one manning all the communication channels at Haylen, it’s up to her to reassure the customers and encourage them to be brave when it comes to fashion. And here’s how she puts it: life’s too short to agonize over whether your tummy is flat enough to wear a cropped top, or whether a red dress is too loud.

Clothing styles aside, Team Haylen’s objective is to have their brand name be synonymous with quality as well – so that their customers can shop at their store with the peace of mind that every item they purchase will be of good quality.

How they do this is to meticulously QC every single item which they bring in. More specifically, the women at Haylen bring in sample pieces and wear these themselves. They go about a full day’s activities in these items – and the item only gets listed on the website if it makes the cut.

Good quality clothing, great service - what’s not to love? We have no doubt that Haylen will soon become a household name with Singaporean women who shop online – and once that happens, their next goal will be to work with local designers, and expand overseas.
