These All-Natural Energy Bars Have Just 3 Ingredients - Fruits, Nuts & Cacao

Hello! You are reading a shoppable magazine. :)

We've always avoided energy bars like the plague - until we chanced upon Raw Bite.

We'll be the first to admit - we aren't normally a fan of energy bars, muesli bars, or protein bars. Quite the opposite, in fact; we avoid them like the plague. If you haven't heard, energy bars are one of the most misleading so-called "healthy" foods out there. They're marketed as healthy, but they aren't actually healthy. Here's why.

Chock full of nutritious ingredients?

Each and every brand of energy bar that you'll find stocked in the supermarket claims to be "chock full of nutritious ingredients" and "wholesome and all natural". But a quick peek at the ingredient list will show you that this isn't true. You'll often find some form of sugar - be it cane juice syrup, high-fructose corn syrup, or corn sweetener - ranked within the top three ingredients in the list. Because these ingredients are listed according to weight, this means that seeing "cane juice syrup" listed as the first ingredient means that your energy bar is made up of predominantly cane juice syrup. Yikes!

But wait a minute...

Is there any real harm in consuming these artificial forms of sugar? The answer is a resounding yes. Take high fructose corn syrup for example. This is essentially a sweetener made from cornstarch, and in most cases, genetically modified corn. It has been found to cause more weight gain than refined sugar (according to a Princeton study), promote cancer growth (according to data from the American Association for Cancer Research), and cause cholesterol levels to spike (according to a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition). We could go on, but just let that sink in for now.

Where does all this leave us? In an era where marketers have zero qualms about misleading consumers in a bid to increase sales, it's more important than ever for consumers to exercise a healthy dose of skepticism and be critical about the products that we use and consume. In particular, when purchasing food items, always, always make sure you read the label instead of blindly believing in however the brand is choosing to position its product.

What should you be looking for, in terms of energy bars?

Ideally, the first few items listed on your energy bars should be fruits, nuts, oats, quinoa, or other natural ingredients. You're also looking for the list to contain as few artificial ingredients as possible - in fact, the ideal-case scenario would be to opt for an energy bar with 100% natural ingredients, such as Raw Bite.

Made in Denmark, Raw Bite bars are organic, gluten-free, and dairy free. They're also the sole food bar in the field rations provided to Danish soldiers - how cool is that? They come in 8 different flavours, and each flavour is made with only natural ingredients. Their Cacao flavour, for example, consists of 54% Fruits (dates, raisins), 36% Nuts (cashews, almonds), 10% Cacao - and that's it!

Taste wise, Raw Bite bars are delicious!

We've tried it, and they go to show that you can have your cake and eat it at the same time. If you're a traditionalist at heart, go for the Raw Cacao, which has a subtle chocolate fragrance without being too sweet. For those who want to try something different, we recommend the Vanilla & Berries bar, which contains a generous amount of cherries, cranberries, and mulberries that come together harmoniously. We also like the Protein bar - containing rice, peas, and pumpkin seeds, this is perfect for those who need an extra boost to complement their workout routine.
