This 43 Year Old Singaporean & Mother of 2 Is Our Very Own Wonder Woman

Cynthia Tan is Singapore’s very own Wonder Woman – here’s why.


Cynthia is 43 years old – but if we hadn’t known better, we would have assumed she’s in her early 30s. Her secret sauce? Her three times a week training sessions that she attends, rain or shine, at boutique gym E’s FITNESS.

Nope, she’s not a tai tai, if that’s what you’re assuming. She works in a high-level position in insurance, and 10 – 12 hour workdays are the norm rather than the exception for her. Oh, and did we mention? She also has two children.

As Cynthia and Elinn (owner of E’s FITNESS) take us on a tour of the gym, it’s clear that Cynthia is in her element. She navigates the tricep extension machine and the squat rack effortlessly, and does one-arm preacher curls and bent-over rows flawlessly.

But Cynthia wasn’t always a gym bunny – in fact, there was a period of time when she was very apprehensive about gym work, because she didn’t want to get too muscular, and pack on too much bulk.

“Of course, that’s just a misconception,” she laughs. She was reassured when Elinn, her trainer, explained to her that women have significantly less testosterone than men, and hence will never bulk up the same way unless they go out of their way to take steroids or other performance-enhancing drugs.

When she first joined E’s FITNESS, Cynthia said that her goal was just to shed some weight so that she would look good in her clothes. “Back then, I just gave birth to my second boy, and I really wanted to lose that flab and regain my pre-pregnancy shape,” Cynthia shares. Two months in, she decided she wanted to try lifting weights, and the rest, as they say, is history.

“After a while, your priorities shift,” says Cynthia. “Your body gets stronger, and you feel this rush of adrenaline and endorphins that comes with it – when that happens, you just want to keep challenging yourself to become stronger. Looking good becomes secondary.”

Whilst Cynthia used to go to group spinning classes in the past, she says that these were unable to give her the same results that training with Elinn did. “When you’re in a group class, the instructor isn’t able to give everyone personal attention, and as a result, you don’t learn the right techniques.”

“With personal training, however, you have someone who’s focusing on you and constantly helping you to achieve the right form – that makes a world of difference,” says Cynthia. But if you’ve been going for personal training sessions for quite some time, wouldn’t you have learned all that you need to go about your gym routine alone? Not at all, says Cynthia – and this is according to personal experience. When Cynthia stopped her training with Elinn and tried to continue increasing her fitness level alone, it just wasn’t the same, she says.

“If you don’t have a trainer and you’re doing the same workout all the time, eventually, it stops being effective, and you’ll plateau. With a trainer, you have someone there to help you mix it up and also push you to hit that next level.”

With all that dedication and hard work, Cynthia has got quite a few personal wins under her belt. One of Cynthia's goals, with training, was to increase her upper body strength. More specifically, she wanted to be able to do reverse sit-ups, dangling in the air, whilst her legs were hooked on the monkeybars - this was something that she saw another member of E's FITNESS achieve the first time she visited the gym. After just 9 months with Elinn, she was able to do that.

On top of that, Cynthia also successfully completed the Standard Chartered marathon a while back. According to her, it wasn't tough at all, and she enjoyed the run from the start to the end. Even though Cynthia didn't have time to run long distance prior to the marathon, she did her training in the gym. This involved using the treadmill on an incline, whilst her legs were tied with resistance bands. She also did various weight training activities which helped to strengthen her core, legs, and ankles.

"At that point in time, I was mentally cursing at Elinn for putting me through such a grueling routine," laughs Cynthia, "but it all paid off in the end." She didn't stop throughout the entire marathon - that's 42 km - and didn't get a single cramp, all because she was so well-prepared.
